DIRECTV Nomad Gets Official Tomorrow, Lets You Download Video To External Device [DirecTV]
An insider tipped us off that the satellite provider is launching the elusive Nomad tomorrow. The device grabs content off your DirectTV DVR, transcodes it, and makes it available for download to your mobile device or PC. More »
It's great that DirecTV came out with the Nomad, but there are definitely things they should have thought about before they released it. There are a few main parts about the product they are lacking. Like the part that live TV can't be watched outside of your home network, the price and the fact that it takes the amount of time of the DVR event for it to download to view it on your mobile. I on the other hand experience all of this and more with my DISH Remote Access app and Sling Adapter from my TV provider/employer DISH Network. With the Adapter and app I can schedule and manage recordings and watch all my recorded and live programming anywhere I go in the world on 3G/4G or WiFi instantly. Plus the Adapter is only $99 compared to the $149 price tag of the Nomad and those customers new and existing to DISH can get a prepaid gift card back after rebate for the Adapter making it practically free, which to me is such a better deal! Check out all the details over at dish.com. :)
The Nomad is an over priced, under achieving piece of technology. It was based on a good idea, but poorly implemented. For $149.00 you get the privilege of being able to transcode up to 20 hours of shows that you can then transfer to your Apple product or PC to watch. Plan ahead though, cause you can not do anything on a whim with it. To transcode an hour long show, takes an hour, of course if you remember you can set it to do this while it is recording. but the format it codes it into, will self delete after 30 days. Comparing this to the sling adapter, you come away with a clear victor. The sling adapter, a true place shifting device, allows you to stream ALL of your recorded shows to your mobile device, and ALL of you live subscribed channels as well, and the recording's don't delete themselves. The sling adapter normally costs $99, but all new and existing customers can qualify for a free sling adapter, making it a clearly better product the The Nomad.
