Pour one out for the Tevatron particle accelerator, because it's shutting down today

The eyes of the physics community are collectively fixed upon Illinois today, where, later this afternoon, researchers at Fermilab will shut down the Tevatron particle accelerator... for good. That's right -- the world's second-largest collider is being laid to rest, after a remarkable 25-year run that was recently halted due to budgetary constraints. Earlier this year, Fermilab's scientists and a group of prominent physicists pleaded with the government to keep the Tevatron running until 2014, but the Energy Department ultimately determined that the lab's $100 million price tag was too steep, effectively driving a nail through the accelerator's subterranean, four-mile-long coffin. First activated in 1985, the Tevatron scored a series of subatomic breakthroughs over the course of its lifespan, including, most notably, the discovery of the so-called top quark in 1995. Its groundbreaking technology, meanwhile, helped pave the way for CERN's Large Hadron Collider, which will now pursue the one jewel missing from the Tevatron's resume -- the Higgs boson. Many experts contend that the collider could've gone on to achieve much more, but its ride will nonetheless come to an inglorious end at 2PM today, when Fermilab director Pier Oddone oversees the Tevatron's last rites. "That will be it," physicist Gregorio Bernardi told the Washington Post. "Then we'll have a big party."Pour one out for the Tevatron particle accelerator, because it's shutting down today originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 08:43:00 EDT. There will be blood: Lytle goes from Octagon to politics

Recently retired fighter Chris Lytle hinted at a future in politics while still in his fighting career. Now that he has given up fighting and is just a firefighter and the father of four children, Lytle has decided to fill up his scads of free time by running for the Indiana State Senate.
Lytle is well-known of one of MMA's good guys, always ready to share his time with a fan or a member of the media. Over the course of his 11-year career, he continued to serve as a firefighter. In the cage, he was the kind of fighter fans always wanted to watch because he was always willing to put on a good show, winning 10 fight night bonuses from the UFC.
Now, Lytle wants to put those qualities to work in the state government. He has already started campaigning, visiting future constituents all over the 28th district and using the tagline, "Fighting for Indiana's Future." Though it's been more than a month since his retirement bout, a submission of Dan Hardy, Lytle is sporting a black eye in many of his pictures. He probably had a fun time explaining that to the people at the senior citizen's center.

Chris Cornell Filling In For Robert Plant On Led Zeppelin Tour? That's News To Him

'I have not been approached to fill in for Robert Plant on the Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be,' singer says.By Chris Harris

Chris Cornell

Photo: MTV News

Former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has spoken out for the first time about rumors that he's been asked to fill in for Robert Plant on a proposed Led Zeppelin reunion tour. The trek would feature original guitarist Jimmy Page, original bassist John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham taking over on drums for his late father, John Bonham.
Cornell has been mentioned — along with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, White Stripes mastermind Jack White and Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy — as a potential Plant fill-in. Plant has already said that he wouldn't take part in the tour.

"I have not been approached so far to fill in for Robert Plant on the upcoming Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be," Cornell told MTV News. "I've heard that from about 200 people now, and it might be one of those situations where it's just an online rumor or it might be true. But if you see anyone from Led Zeppelin around, let me know. I think I should actually fill in for Jimmy Page on the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss tour."
Cornell's denial comes just a day after Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford confirmed reports that frontman Steven Tyler recently met with Zeppelin for an impromptu jam session. "They did it for fun," Whitford said during an appearance on the syndicated show "Todd N Tyler Radio Empire." "I actually think Jimmy wanted Steven to come over and play a little bit because I think he was trying to light a fire under Robert."
Rumors of a Zeppelin reunion tour have abounded since the iconic band played a single reunion set last year at London's O2 Arena. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider added fuel to the fire last month when he revealed that the group was thinking of touring, with or without Plant.
According to Snider, the rest of the band told Plant, " 'We're all rehearsed, we're ready to go. Here's a gazillion dollars on the table. If you don't do it, we're going out with this kid [Myles Kennedy].' "
"And he can sing the sh-- out of Zeppelin," Snider added. "They're going to hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, 'OK,' and step in."
In a recent interview, Jones told BBC Radio Devon that a new singer was being sought to take over for Plant. "We are trying out a couple of singers," he said. "We want to do it. It's sounding great, and we want to get on and get out there."
But Jones insists that he, Page and Bonham aren't interested in finding a Plant clone. "It's got to be right," he said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be onboard."
Of course, even if Zeppelin were to approach him, Cornell might be too busy to take over vocals for the band. His upcoming Timbaland-produced solo LP, Scream, will be released within the next few months. Cornell told MTV News last month that some of his fans might consider Scream something of a departure, but he doesn't see it that way.
"It makes me happy that there's this perception that I have a group of fans that I'm now sort of throwing a curve at and what their reaction will be," he said. "But I've been in this situation so many times already. When I put out [1999's] Euphoria Morning, my main goal was to create an album that sounded like nothing I'd done in Soundgarden, and I did that. I also had that with Temple of the Dog, where I showed up with songs that weren't necessarily riff-based. And then, of course, the pairing of me and members of Rage Against the Machine had everyone sort of speculating about what that would sound like.
"It feels like I've done this so many times that when it's presented to me as being a departure, I feel that's a misconception," he added. "I feel like that's my theme at this point."

UFC allows questionable music choices at UFN 25

One of the fun parts of a live UFC event is the way fighters use music to pump up as they walk out to the Octagon, but two fighters made questionable choices in their walkout songs at Ultimate Fight Night 25. Those bad decisions were then repeated by UFC president Dana White, who approves every song that is used by fighters.
Ken Stone, who won via submission, walked out to the Prodigy song, "Smack My Bitch Up." The song repeats two lines, "Smack my bitch up, change my pitch up." When it was released in 1997, it was protested by women's groups as condoning violence towards women. MTV only allowed the song to be played late at night, and Wal-Mart and K-Mart pulled the CD from its stores. Prodigy released a statement that the song was not about violence, but that's not apparent from its lyrics.
The next bad decision was when Matt Riddle walked out to the Scorpions song, "Rock You Like a Hurricane." In most cities, it's the perfect song to walk out to, but these fights took place in New Orleans. That's a city that was literally rocked by a hurricane in 2005. Hurricane Katrina's effects are still being felt in New Orleans, as they struggle to restore their population and status as a tourist destination to pre-Katrina levels.
The UFC generally controls their brand very tightly, and UFC officials confirmed to Cagewriter that White approves every walkout song. He has vetoed songs in the past. It's surprising that the UFC would let these two songs slip through.

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Nirvana Among O Music Award Nominees

Katy Perry, Odd Future, Demi Lovato will also face off on October 31 in categories like Oops! I Did It Online and Fan Army FTW.By Gil Kaufman

The list of nominees runs from Justin Bieber to Courtney Love, Britney Spears, Scissor Sisters, Katy Perry, Bjork, Nirvana, Dolly Parton and Snoop Dogg, and that can only mean one thing: It must be time for the O Music Awards again.
When MTV launched its first-annual digital music celebration earlier this year, we promised that it would be like no other awards show, with trophies handed out before, after and during the show, as well as throughout the year.

Sticking to that plan, the O Awards will return for a second round on October 31, with some of the new categories coming courtesy of user suggestions.
Among the five new user-generated categories are "Oops! I Did It Online," in which over-sharing celebs such as Sinead O'Connor and T-Pain will face off against the Game and Courtney Love; and Best Artist with a Cameraphone, which pits Demi Lovato against Bieber, Young the Giant, Katy Perry, the Deftones and Shiny Toy Guns. The other new categories include Best Web Born Artist (MNDR, Odd Future, the Weeknd), Best Vintage Viral Video (Metallica, Nirvana, Notorious B.I.G., O'Connor) and Best Lyrics Video (Perry, Joe Jonas, Lenny Kravitz, Christina Perri).
Among Gaga's two nominations are Fan Army FTW — in which she'll square off with the followers of Bieber, Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Lovato, ICP, Adam Lambert and Tokio Hotel — and Must Follow Artist on Twitter, in which she faces Cher, Snoop Dogg, Blink-182's Mark Hoppus and Blake Shelton.
The O Music Awards will also honor a number of artists who are really good at this whole online thing, with Bjork, Chris Milk, Girl Talk and the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne vying for the Digital Genius Award.
The other categories include: Best Fan Cover, Hottest Music NILF (think about it), WTF I Love This Award (online craziness), the self-explanatory Too Much Ass for TV award, Most Outrageous Tweet and Best Music Forum. There are also awards coming for Most Innovative Festival, Best Music App, Best Music Hack, Beyond the Blog and Most Addictive Social Music Service, which includes such faves as Spotify, Turntable.fm and Rdio.
The first edition of the awards featured performances by Mumford & Sons, Foster the People, Lupe Fiasco, Matt & Kim and a world record freestyle by Chiddy Bang's Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege
The O Music Award's first-time winners included Gaga (Most Innovative Artist and Must Follow Artist on Twitter), Kanye West (Best Tweet), Tokio Hotel's Aliens (Fan Army FTW), Thirty Seconds to Mars (NSFW Music Video), Aquarium Drunkard (Best Independent Music Blog) and MJJ Fan Community (Best Fan Forum).
The O Music Awards 2 will unfold on Halloween on OMUsicAwards.com, as well as MTV.com, VH1.com, CMT.com, LogoTV.com and MTVHive.com. Fans can vote for their favorites at OMUsicAwards.com.

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced

Mozilla's Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox's new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel -- which is analogous to Chrome Canary -- that will be called 'aurora' and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new 'nightly icon.' The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including 'aurora') are not necessarily final, but it's unlikely that they'll change. We're also awaiting the arrival of the new 'channel switching' technology, which should arrive in the next few days -- in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 05:20:00 EST. TripAdvisor app for Windows Phone 7 now available

TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related -- from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that's a neat feature, it's also a bit of a downer -- because, really, it's about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn't already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn't work with WP7 at the moment).

While it's nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it'd be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you're frequently on the go -- at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.

Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Hudson Added To Michael Forever Tribute

Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and many others will also participate in the Jamie Foxx-hosted show on October 8.By Gil Kaufman

The Black Eyed Peas

Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images

As the October 8 date approaches, the Michael Forever tribute concert in Cardiff, Wales, in honor of late pop icon Michael Jackson has added two more headliners. On Friday (September 23), the Black Eyed Peas joined a lineup that is also slated to feature performances by Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Leona Lewis, Ne-Yo, Craig David, Pixie Lott, Alexandra Burke, Alien Ant Farm and Motown legend Smokey Robinson.
The show, which is being presented by Jackson's mother, Katherine, along with some but not all of the King of Pop's siblings (and without the sanction of his estate), will be hosted by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx. Pregnant pop queen Beyoncé will appear in some form at the show via a pre-taped satellite segment.
A press release also announced that Oscar-winning singer Jennifer Hudson has been added to the lineup as well.
In a statement, Peas co-founder will.i.am — who spent time in the studio with Jackson prior to the singer's June 2009 death — said of his band's participation, "This show is going to be an incredibly personal and moving evening for me. Remember that Michael's music, his great, great songs, have been an inspiration to my whole life and certainly formed the soundtrack to my childhood. When I was a little kid of six or seven growing up in Los Angeles, there was Michael recording Thriller, and all his early hits, just a few miles away across town — obviously I didn't know him at that time, but I loved him as a fan."
One of the members of the original Jackson Five, sibling Marlon Jackson, will be on hand, and he expressed his excitement about the addition of the Peas. "We're all really delighted and touched that the Black Eyed Peas are able to come and take part " he said. "My brother rated Will.i.am and the original things he does in music very highly. I guess you could say it was a case of mutual respect."
Some members of the Jackson family, including siblings Janet, Jermaine and Randy, have complained about the timing of the show, which will take place in the midst of the manslaughter trial of Jackson's physician Dr. Conrad Murray.

Lily Collins Is Our New Class' 'Ass-Kicking Girl Next Door'

With 'Mortal Instruments' and 'Snow White' still to come, the badass-yet-relatable actress is destined for mega-fame.By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Kara Warner

Lily Collins

Photo: MTV News

We called it way back in January: Lily Collins was an actress to watch in 2011.

At that point, her career was just heating up following a turn as Sandra Bullock's daughter in "The Blind Side." An impressive series of castings in high-profile films followed: "Priest," "Abduction" opposite Taylor Lautner and an adaptation of the best-selling YA series "The Mortal Instruments." A few months later, she landed the role of Snow White in Relativity Media's Julia Roberts-starring take on the fairy tale.
Collins is making good on our predictions, which is why we've selected her as part of our New Class — a collection of young talent about to rise to the top of Hollywood, including her "Mortal Instruments" co-star Jamie Campbell Bower. With her badass-yet-relatable roles, Collins is our New Class' "Ass-Kicking Girl Next Door."
Though she's had all of 2011 to get used to the spotlight, the whole celebrity thing continues to feel odd.
"It feels very surreal," she told us at the "Abduction" red carpet. "It's weird getting out of a car and people are saying my name. It's still a weird concept to me."
Give her time. Collins told us she'd like to model her career after Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet or Meryl Streep. "I like that none of them have stuck themselves in a box," she said. "They've done all sorts of roles — comedic, dramatic, they've gone from indies to big motion pictures. I love their choices."
And she's a fan of the New Class itself, which includes not only Bower, but Emma Watson, Josh Hutcherson, Julianne Hough and Nina Dobrev.
"It's an honor to be placed in the New Class of actors," Collins said. "I'm doing what I love, and I'm having the best time."

Anne Hathaway's Full Catwoman Costume Revealed

Latest photo of actress in 'Dark Knight Rises' gear shows lots of leather, dangerously high heels and a curious set of ears.By Eric Ditzian

Anne Hathaway on the set of "Dark Knight Rises"

Photo: PhamousFotos/ Splash News

Where are Catwoman's ears? And what's up with her eyewear, perhaps more reminiscent of BluBlockers than something a Gotham City villain would rock?
Those were among our first questions in August when we checked out the first official photo of Anne Hathaway in character.
Newly published paparazzi pics from the Los Angeles set of "The Dark Knight Rises," however, might deliver answers to both of those geeky queries. The new shots appear to suggest Catwoman's glasses flip up to create ear-like points above her head. Function and form!
For a full analysis of the new Catwoman costume, click here.
In a sense, then (and if this hypothesis is correct),
Hathaway's full costume was on display back in August, just not in a recognizable or complete form. The glasses-into-ears theory appears to be a more logical one than another bit of superhero speculation out there: that Catwoman's mask, based on those hollow-looking ears and some similar design lines, is actually Batman's mask, artfully mangled. While Hathaway's character clearly does a bit of borrowing (or, more likely, stealing) from Bruce Wayne, as in the photo where she rides his Batpod, we're not sold on the similarity between each mask.
The rest of the costume, as revealed in the new photos, is largely what we've already seen: lots of tight leather and a pair of dangerously high-heel boots; we can understand why Hathaway has previously cracked that she is living on kale and dust, just so she can slip into the ensemble. According to Hathaway, the collective reaction to the first look at her Catwoman costume — including in some corners within the MTV Newsroom — was a resounding, "Meh." But the actress also promised us that we've only seen "about a tenth of what that suit can do."
Perhaps her transforming ears — if that's what they really are — represent a few more percentage points. With the rapid pace of photos coming from the "Dark Knight" set, we'll undoubtedly get even more soon.
Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

'Majors & Minors': Kinder 'Idol' for Tweens?

You have to be 15 to try out for American Idol, and even if you make it, you're competing against contestants who may have a decade or more experience than you. So what's a talented tween to do?
Now, these young aspiring singers have their own forum -- a new reality show, Majors & Minors. The series, which premieres Friday at 8 p.m. ET on The Hub, is a singing competition that brings together several established artists (the "majors") with 12 aspiring singers between the ages of 10 and 16 (the "minors"). Take a look at the preview below!

And no, this isn't a kid version of Idol. That's already been done, when Idol spun off American Juniors in the summer of 2003. That show failed to catch on, and went away after one season.
Majors and Minors is different. Technically, it's a competition, with the winner receiving a recording deal with RCA/Jive Label Group and an opportunity to be featured in a cross-country concert tour. But no one gets voted off. Instead, all 12 competitors will get acquainted with the music business through time spent in state-of-the-art music studios, with those who've already made it -- including Adam Lambert, Avril Lavigne, Brandy, Colbie Caillat, Leona Lewis, Jordin Sparks, Sean Kingston, Will.i.am, and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder.
"It's not about critiquing, it's about uplifting," Brandy told E! Online. A big fan of the show's kinder, gentler approach, she said, "I think when you're that young, if you were to get voted off, it would mess with you mentally…in some way that's connected to losing. Even though it's not, because so many people have been voted off shows and become huge superstars. Jennifer Hudson, by the way."
Brandy was particularly impressed by 10-year-old Ashley Nicole Greene, who belted out Etta James' "At Last" and made it her own.
"These children are just amazing," said Brandy. "They're very very young, and they know exactly who they are. And that's the scary part, because we're supposed to…give them advice. I really didn't know what to say when I was there. I was trying to find something to say so I could sound cool on camera, but it was mind-blowing how these kids knew exactly who they were."
For the record, Brandy is something of an authority on early success: She was just 15 when she released her debut album.

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it's inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first "official" wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it's got a similar feel to the good ol' Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet's source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape -- though all that's been located thus far are "[various files] scattered throughout the OS" and the aptly-named twinui.dll.Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 10:45:00 EST. Novatel U679 Turbo Stick delivers 4G LTE to Bell laptop customers for $60, with 3-year contract

Do you live in one of Bell's LTE markets and own a laptop? Do you wish your machine could hitch a ride on the Canadian carrier's 4G waves? Well sir or ma'am, may we submit for your consideration, the Novatel U679 Turbo Stick -- an LTE USB modem that can hit a maximum speed of 75Mbps. (Though, generally you're looking at between 7Mbps and 14Mbps.) When LTE is unavailable, the U679 falls back on 42Mbps, dual-carrier HSPA+ or plain ol' 21Mbps HSPA+. You can pick one up today for just $60 with a three-year contract, but those with a fear of commitment will have to plunk down $120 to avoid being locked into a service contract. If you've still got questions, might we suggest peeping the PR after the break.Continue reading Novatel U679 Turbo Stick delivers 4G LTE to Bell laptop customers for $60, with 3-year contractNovatel U679 Turbo Stick delivers 4G LTE to Bell laptop customers for $60, with 3-year contract originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 04:02:00 EDT. Texas Instruments wraps up purchase of National Semiconductor

In April, Texas Instruments announced its intention to snatch up National Semiconductor for a cool $6.5 billion. Now, almost six months later, the acquisition is complete and TI can tack another few percentage points on to its already market-leading chunk of the analog chip market. At least for now, National will operate as a branch of TI's analog division, which now accounts for over 50-percent of the company's revenue, and keep its (reasonably) well known brand name alive. For a few more details on the deal, check out the PR after the break.Continue reading Texas Instruments wraps up purchase of National SemiconductorTexas Instruments wraps up purchase of National Semiconductor originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 00:49:00 EDT. Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

LG Esteem leaked, delivers more LTE respect to MetroPCS

The LG Esteem has been spotted hanging out in several official-looking press shots accompanied by several pages of specification juice at LG's partner portal site. Previously seen under the guise Bryce, and seemingly identical to Verizon's LG Revolution, this metroPCS interpretation looks set to arrive very soon. A welcome upgrade to the network's previous LTE offering, the Esteem runs Gingerbread on a 4.3 inch screen and has some respectable mid-range crendentials under the hood including a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage expandable by microSD. There's also a five megapixel snapper on the back, embedded in a stylish metal strip similar to the dual-core T-Mobile G2x. Unlike LG's powerful flagship, though, MetroPCS will reportedly be offering up the Esteem off-contract for $349 -- a reasonable way to increase your LTE-connected self-worthLG Esteem leaked, delivers more LTE respect to MetroPCS originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 12:43:00 EDT. Yoel Romero?s long road to Strikeforce debut

CINCINNATI -- Yoel Romero Palacio will make his Strikeforce debut on Saturday against former light heavyweight champ Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante, a tough test in just his fifth fight. But his journey to MMA was one that prepared him for any test.
Romero wrestled for Cuba, and around the turn of the century, was one of the world's best at 84 kg. He has world and Olympic medals, including a world championship in 1999, but he defected from Cuba after a wrestling tournament in Germany in 2005.
This was a dangerous decision, because top wrestlers are well-known athletes in Cuba. He had to sell all of his belongings and leave his family. His wife and young daughter are now with him in Germany, but his six-year-old son is still in Cuba. He told Cagewriter that it was a terribly difficult decision to defect from the Communist country.
"It wasn't just Cuba. It was my family."
He coached wrestling before starting to train in MMA. Though he didn't have his first fight until 2009, MMA was on his mind even when he was still in Cuba.
"It's a sport that I think God gave me the talent to be good at, and I felt that attraction when I was in Cuba and watched a few of the first UFCs, with Royce Gracie, and his wins made me really feel a passion to try the sport. I felt like it was in me to be able to try it out," he told Cagewriter.
He hopes to find the same success and satisfaction in MMA that he did in wrestling. He has yet to have a fight go to a decision, winning all four by TKO or knockout. Romero Palacio is hoping for a true test in Cavalcante.
"I haven't been able to let it go like I wanted to because those fights were just the beginners. To let it go the way I can? I will have even better satisfaction than in wrestling."
Though wrestlers are often tagged with being boring fighters, Romero Palacio promises that fans will enjoy watching him fight.
"I always fight for the public. It's always been my style to fight for the public. I like the fans to feel satisfied with what I have done," he said. "It's going to be a gladiators fight."
But that doesn't mean that he has forgotten his roots as a wrestler. With the Olympics coming up next summer, he does have the itch to compete again. His one-time nemesis, American Cael Sanderson, is returning to competition after retiring to coach. Romero Palacio smiled at the idea of wrestling Sanderson, who beat him at the 2004 Olympics, again.
"I would love to. I want to show the world who is the world's best wrestler at that weight class. I don't think [Cael Sanderson] would like it if I came back."
Romero Palacio's bout with Feijao and the rest of the preliminary fights for Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov will air on HDNet starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Hughes goes old school, training with Penn and Miletich for next week?s fight

Only in mixed martial arts, right? Unless we're talking Rocky III, when Balboa and Apollo Creed worked together, it's bizarre to see fighters working together just months after one knocks the other one silly in a fight. But that's exactly what Matt Hughes is doing by training with B.J. Penn, the guy who beat him less than 11 months ago.
"I brought in a couple of special guests ? B.J. Penn and Pat Miletich. Being around such great fighters and coaches is humbling, No. 1; and No. 2, it was a great learning environment because we all learned off each other," Hughes wrote in ESPN.com blog.
Hughes said he also worked with Jeremy Horn, Matt Pena and DaMarques Johnson. In advance of his UFC 135 fight next week against Josh Koscheck, the experience was eye opening.
"All I had to do was show up, not do anything on the mat, and I was gonna sit there and learn. If I wanted to, I could have charged admission and people would have loved to just sit there, watch and soak it in," said Hughes.

Publicly, Penn and Hughes seemed to have a pretty heated relationship until the last few years. Hughes pointed out that Penn's appearance in his latest camp was actually paying back a favor. Just weeks after he was laid out by Penn at UFC 123, Hughes actually traveled to Hawaii to work takedown defense for the Hawaiian's fight against Jon Fitch in February.
Miletich, a former UFC champion from 1998-2000, hadn't worked with Hughes since 2007. Hughes left Miletich Fighting Systems in Iowa to open his own training center, but fighter and coach stayed on good terms since the split.

Justin Bieber, Lil Twist Single Will Have 'Summer' Feel

'It's a Miami record,' Young Money rapper tells MTV News at VMAs.By Rob Markman

Lil Twist

Photo: Michael Bezjian/ WireImage

LOS ANGELES — Lil Wayne may have just dropped Tha Carter IV, but don't expect his Young Money artists to just stand around and bask in Weezy's multiplatinum glow. Drake's Take Care will be the next album to drop on the label, and Tyga's Careless World is coming soon, as well as Birdman's Cash Money release Bigga Than Life. Dallas rapper Lil Twist is cooking up his debut too, and fans can expect a big-time collaboration.

"Don't Get It Twisted is definitely coming before the year is over," the 18-year-old rapper said on the 2011 VMA black carpet. "I'm getting ready to put out my next record, which features Justin [Bieber], the one that everybody's been waitin' on. 'Wherever You Are' featuring Justin Bieber coming soon."
Twist and Bieb's friendship is no secret. Twizzy has been teasing a full collaborative mixtape between the two, but as of now, nothing has materialized. "Me and Justin, we actually met through a mutual friend, and after that, we got real cool, actually," he told MTV News last November. "[We] started working in the studio, sending stuff through the MacBook and everything. And then he was like, 'Yo, bro, we should do a mixtape. Let's go.' We just started then."
While there is no telling when the mixtape will come, Twist is confident that their single will surface shortly. "It's gonna be great. It's a cool summer record," Twist told MTV News of his and Justin's upcoming collaboration. "It's a party song. Straight for the sun. It's a Miami record."
In 2010, Twist dropped the album's first single, "Little Secret," featuring Bow Wow and came back this year with the Lil Wayne-assisted "Love Affair." The R&B-laced song found Twist singing about being caught in the middle of a love triangle, while Wayne crudely rapped around the same subject. For his current single, "New Money," the YMCMB young'un hooked up with R&B singer Mishon.
A promotional insert included with Tha Carter IV CD has Don't Get It Twisted slated for a November 8 release; whether that date sticks remains to be seen.
What are your expectations for a Lil Twist/ Justin Bieber collaboration? Tell us in the comments!
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Stick with MTV News for winners, fashion pics, video and behind-the-scenes stories about everything that went down. Visit VMA.MTV.com for the latest.

Silent for too long: Bisping is back and ready to make ?Mayhem? pay

Put anyone around Jason "Mayhem" Miller for two months and they may want to whack the middleweight veteran. Throw the highly-volatile Michael Bisping into that situation and all hell is probably going to break loose.
Taping for Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter" is done, but now the fun begins between the coaches. The testy Brit said he's ready to shred Mayhem at the TUF 14 Finale.
"[There was] a bit of friction between me and Miller, just a little bit, ups and downs. At the start of the season I thought he was an OK guy. By the end of the season I wanted to kill him. Fortunately, December 3, I'll get that opportunity," Bisping told Ariel Helwani on AOL's "The MMA Hour."
Bisping is annoyed by lots of people, so it's not shocking to hear that the needling host of MTV's "Bully Beatdown" irked him.
"Personally I find [the 'Mayhem' persona] quite annoying. Each to their own, though, I mean a lot of people find me annoying, so you know what I mean, I'll take the rough with the smooth," Bisping said. "He's not a bad guy, but he just rubs me up the wrong way a little bit. As I said, not everyone's gonna like everybody. He certainly doesn't like me, and I don't think I like him particularly."
In the end, Bisping thought he won the majority of the verbal sparring.
"Yeah, I mean he tried to [get under my skin], unfortunately Miller's mouth is bigger than his brain, so he didn't do a very good job of it. He tried to do it a few times, but they were really quite pitiful?I definitely get the upper hand throughout the entire season," Bisping said. "I feel he crossed the line a few times, there were a few instances that he definitely crossed the line, so come December 3rd, I'm looking forward to making him pay for his words and pay for his disrespect."
This is a great opportunity for both fighters especially Bisping. He was quieted for most of 2011 following a spitting incident after his Jorge Rivera fight in February at UFC 127.
The prefight trash talk between the camps got personal. Seconds after Bisping pounded out Rivera, he approached the American's corner and spit in the direction of Matt Phinney. There was no official suspension or disciplinary action taken by the UFC, but Bisping disappeared from the scene for a few months.
When we spoke to him back in June, he was still seething about the whole incident.

Lest you read over it like, erm, some of us did, it's worth a mention that along with the official launch of Google Wallet in San Francisco and New York comes news that the service also has expanded to more creditors. American Express, Visa and Discover "have made available their NFC specifications that could enable their cards to be added to future versions of Google Wallet," according to Google's official blog post.
That means while you're still only currently able to use a Citi MasterCard (or pre-paid card), we should see more options in the future. Hopefully more locales will follow.

On the surface, it looks like the S100 isn’t much different [...]

Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer wow awards show audience with medley.By Kara Warner

Just when you thought the 2011 Emmy Awards were a bit lackluster — with the "Modern Family" dominance, host Jane Lynch keeping things clean and safe, and even Charlie Sheen coming out classy — the guys from the Lonely Island rolled in to liven things up with a lively, star-studded performance of their hits "Jack Sparrow," "3-Way (The Golden Rule)" and "I Just Had Sex," which all were nominated for Original Song Emmy this year.

The trio (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer) — who sadly lost the Creative Arts Emmy to Justin Timberlake for his "SNL" musical monologue — kicked off their medley with a bang, beginning with "Jack Sparrow" and crooner Michael Bolton. Much like the original "SNL" Digital Short, Bolton sported a pirate costume and climbed aboard a makeshift pirate ship surrounded by gyrating dancers dressed like waves.
The next song, "3-Way (The Golden Rule)," was performed by special guest stars Ed Helms, Maya Rudolph and John Stamos. Helms and Stamos rocked the familiar shiny, sleazy guy suits worn by original performers Samberg and Timberlake, while Rudolph took over the Lady Gaga-originated role (and colorful costume).
The medley's final, censor-testing number was "I Just Had Sex,"
performed by Akon, who also sang the original. John Stewart later gave the Lonely Island guys a shout-out for the explicit lyrics in the song, saying he will have to explain them to his young kids.
After the performance brought down the house, follow-up presenters Lea Michele and Ian Somerhalder said, "Nothing we say is going to be funny now," as they approached the podium to present the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Series.

Microsoft files antitrust complaint against Google in Europe, showdown imminent

Microsoft, citing Google's tyrannical 95% share of the European search market, has lodged a formal complaint with the European Commission. It's not like Microsoft is breaking any ground here -- the European Commission has been investigating Google's alleged violation of European competition law since November 2010 -- but there's no doubt that the addition of Microsoft's gravitas will affect the proceedings.

Microsoft's complaint reads like a sincere and plaintive cry for help against the Google Overlord. Microsoft lists no less than six damning reasons why Google's behavior is anti-competitive -- from Windows Phone 7's incompatibility with YouTube, to its nefarious handling of Google Books -- and finishes with a wide-eyed plea to the European Commission to please find Google guilty.

For those of you that have been following Microsoft's own antitrust troubles over the last decade, don't worry: MS is quick to point out the irony in the situation. "There of course will be some who will point out the irony in today's filing. Having spent more than a decade wearing the shoe on the other foot with the European Commission, the filing of a formal antitrust complaint is not something we take lightly. This is the first time Microsoft Corporation has ever taken this step. More so than most, we recognize the importance of ensuring that competition laws remain balanced and that technology innovation moves forward."

It sounds like Microsoft, having well and truly gone through the wringer, wants Google to be held similarly accountable.
