Nogueira hopes to answer the critics in his comeback fight

It seems like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira went from contender to card filler overnight. That really hasn't been the case, but for many there's a lot of doubt over what the PRIDE fighting legend has left in the tank.
"Big Nog" is only 35 years old, but he's battled injuries over the last three years and gone just 1-2. Now he's facing one of the UFC's young lions in Brendan Schaub. It's been a long battle against knee and hip injuries.
"Besides my physical and technical performance, I have the will to do anything. See four months ago, I couldn't walk. I recovered for several months to take this challenge to fight at UFC Rio," said Nogueira.
Nogueira said his rapid return was made possible by his high level training partners like Junior dos Santos, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Rafael Cavalcante and Antonio "Big Foot" Silva.
Damon Martin from MMAWeekly and ProMMARadio's Larry Pepe joined Cagewriter to break down Big Nog's chances against Schaub.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 15:30:00 EST. Flo Rida Samples Etta James On 'Good Feeling'

'It's legendary,' Flo tells MTV News of his brand-new single.By Rob Markman

Soul singers are making a comeback in 2011. First Jay-Z and Kanye resurrected Otis Redding on their single "Otis," and now Flo Rida reworks some classic Etta James vocals for his new single "Good Feeling."
And like his past #1 hits, including 2007's "Low" and '09's "Right Round," Flo is expecting to top the charts once again.

"It's legendary, we got Etta James featured on there, so it's crazy," he told MTV News from the 2011 VMA black carpet on Sunday. "Produced by Dr. Luke; you know we always with those #1 records. I'm very excited."
The song, which was released to iTunes on Monday, starts out with a dance-infused drum pattern, complete with electric bleeps that echo throughout the intro. After the eighth bar, Etta James' vocals are ushered in: "Ohhh, sometimes I get a good feeling."
The sample is lifted from James' 1962 "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and has been updated for a 2011 electro-feel. After the chorus, Flo comes in, rapping in double-time about his success in the music game. And the Carol City, Florida, MC has much to celebrate. Later this year, he'll release his fourth solo LP, Only One Rida (Part 2), the follow-up to his 2010 album, which included the hit singles "Club Can't Handle Me" and "Turn Around (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)."
Now he can add a song with Etta James — or at least an Etta James sample — to his list of musical moments. "You know, it just gotta be a blessing from God to make that happen," Flo Rida said. "We got that cleared and I'm very excited."
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Stick with MTV News for winners, fashion pics, video and behind-the-scenes stories about everything that went down. Visit VMA.MTV.com for the latest.

George Clooney Leaves Steven Soderbergh's 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.'

George Clooney would probably make for one kick-ass uncle, but sadly, he will no longer be the man from "U.N.C.L.E."
The Oscar winning actor has long been attached to Steven Soderbergh's adaptation of the 1960s spy drama, but Deadline reports that Clooney is now walking away from the project. It's unclear exactly why he's stepping aside, [...]

Katy Perry Closing In On Michael Jackson's #1 Singles Record

If 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)' tops Hot 100, Perry's Teenage Dream will tie MJ's mark of five #1s from a single album.By James Montgomery

Katy Perry's unstoppable Teenage Dream album continues to churn out hits ... and now, it might just make history too.
If Dream's fifth single, the just-released "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)", continues its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (it currently sits at #4, jumping 27 spots from last week), Perry will not only become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off one album, she'll be the first artist of any gender to accomplish the feat since Michael Jackson had five chart-topping singles off his Bad album in 1987 and 1988.
Perry's previous #1s from the Dream album are, of course, "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework" and "E.T." Jackson's five #1s from the Bad album are "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana."
Perry has already shattered the Hot 100 record for most consecutive weeks with a single inside the Top 10 (48, a number previously held by Swedish popmeisters Ace of Base), then kept that momentum going by spending an entire year in the chart's upper echelon. More incredibly, that streak is still active, as two of Perry's singles — "T.G.I.F." and "E.T." — sit at numbers 4 and 5, respectively.
What's more, "T.G.I.F" currently sits atop the Billboard Digital Songs chart, and may soon be her sixth single to pass the 4 million mark in digital sales, joining "E.T.," "California Gurls," "Firework," and from her One of the Boys album, "Hot N Cold" and "I Kissed a Girl." No other artist has even had four songs pass the 4 million download mark ... Perry's closest competitors in that regard are Lady Gaga and Rihanna, both of whom have had three 4 million-sellers.
What do you think of Katy Perry's chart streak? Sound off in the comments!

Coldplay, Led Zeppelin Album Covers Featured On New British Stamps

Coldplay's new British stamps

Photo: Royal Mail

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.
The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin's IV, David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, The Clash's London Calling, New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream's Screamadelica, Pink Floyd's The Division Bell, Blur's Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head.
Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery.
"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."
Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date."
"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7 originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 07:40:00 EST. Pat Curran wants to take next big step at Bellator 48

The world of mixed martial arts is searching for featherweights who can compete with Jose Aldo. On his way to a 9-0 record with Zuffa's fight promotions, the UFC champion has destroyed everything in his path. Kenny Florian is up next, but after that who knows?
With a win tomorrow at Bellator 48 in Uncasville, Ct., Pat Curran or Marlon Sandro could be in the discussion. Curran (15-4) and Sandro (19-2) battle for the Bellator Featherweight tourney title, $100,000 to the winner and a guaranteed shot at the Bellator 145-pound champ Joe Warren.
Sandro, a huge free agent signing from Sengoku in Japan, entered as the tourney favorite.
"He's a very tough fighter and explosive," Curran told the Chicago Sun-Times. "He puts on a very high pace. I definitely I have to be up to par for this. He's one of the top featherweights in the world and definitely trains with some of the top featherweights in the world."
With two impressive wins and a history of success in these tournament formats, Curran has made this brawl into a tough one to call.
"The tournaments are so close together they kind of remind me of wrestling tournaments in a way," Curran said. "You just constantly staying in shape, in the gym 24/7 and you're just focusing on one fight after the next. I like having these fights closer together. You can knock them out, then you can take a little bit of time off to relax and just get right back at it again."
Curran, 24, was a high school wrestler in Florida. In 2007, he re-located to the Chicago area to train with his cousin Jeff, a former WEC champion.
Curran is on a great run and the recent drop to the 145-pound weight class has only helped. It's not as if he was a slouch at 155 pounds. He beat Roger Huerta and Toby Imada on his way to a 2010 Bellator lightweight tourney title and followed that up by giving Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez one of his toughest fights in years.
If Sandro wins and ever gets to the UFC, it sets up an interesting quandary because he's a trainer partner with Aldo. Sandro is a slight favorite tomorrow night at minus-120, while Curran is minus-110.
Tomorrow's card is also highlighted by a heavyweight clash between two-time NCAA Div. 1 heavyweight wrestling champ Cole Konrad and UFC/Strikeforce veteran Paul Buentello. Former UFC heavyweight king Ricco Rodriguez will take on Kimbo Slice-killer Seth Petruzelli.

Video roundup: White, GSP and Rashad on new FOX deal

Dana White was downright giddy when he did some one-on-one's following the announcement that UFC has locked up a deal with FOX. He has every right to be especially about what's on the way for the "Ultimate Fighter." It feels line a re-birth for the show.
"When it comes to ratings going down [on Spike] ... John Landgraf (head of FX), this guy is a genius when it comes to television, one of the things that he said and it's true, is we weren't being promoted," White told MMAHeat's Karyn Bryant. "And if you look at the numbers we pulled with no promotion, wait 'til you see what we pull when we're being promoted."
White is happy for the company, but he's also excited for what network TV will bring for the competitors in the sport.
"This is a long time coming," White said. "[...] The sport and the athletes will finally get he credit, and the respect that they deserve from the mainstream press."
Georges St-Pierre and Rashad Evans also spoke to Bryant.

Nedkov shows off scary power in UFC 134 slugfest against Cane

In his UFC debut, Stanislav Nedkov delivered some clear messages tonight. He's one tough dude and future opponents better look out for that right hand.
The Bulgarian UFC newcomer was getting drilled on the feet by Luiz Cane until he landed a great left hook and followed it up with an thunderous overhand right that changed everything. Cane was finished on his feet as he retreated. Twenty unanswered shots later, the Brazilian was upset on his home turf by Nedkov at the 4:13 mark of the first round at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro.
Nedkov looked tiny compared to the 6-foot-2 Cane and was giving up six inches of reach. The problem was, Cane kept his left hand too low. It was a matter of time before the Nedkov overhand right landed on the button.
Nedkov showed some gumption too. In the middle of the first round, it appeared that he suffered a nose injury. For about a minute before the stoppage, Nedkov's output slowed down as he kept grabbing at the nose. Then came the big punches.
Cane was so out of it, he turned his back and unleashed an odd kicking motion at the cage. When he bounced off the fence and turned around, Nedkov was there to unload with some massive lefts. A right hook dropped Cane and he was unable to defend himself as referee Mario Yamasaki stepped in to save him.
Cane (11-4, 4-4 UFC) is a skilled striker, but got sloppy in this one. "Bahna" has now lost three of his last four with the promotion. This was Nedkov's first fight in the UFC. He's a perfect 12-0 overall.

Apple stops renting TV shows in iTunes, could be working on a new kind of video service

Apple has pulled the plug on TV episode rentals via iTunes, abruptly leaving customers with only the option of purchasing per episode -- good thing you can watch those on your Apple TV streamed from the cloud -- or a Season Pass where available. AllThingsD has a quote from spokesman Tom Neumayr indicating this was in response to customers that "overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows." Making the timing of the move particularly curious are once-again renewed rumors of an Apple HDTV and a WSJ profile of new CEO Tim Cook that indicates the company is "working on new technology to deliver video to televisions, and has been discussing whether to try to launch a subscription TV service." Like Google, any move depends on its success in negotiating a new delivery model from the networks, who so far have been averse to anything that threatens their existing relationship with pay-TV providers. It appears 99-cent rentals didn't move the needle, so we'll wait and see what the folks from Cupertino have up their sleeve next.

Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android

Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won't affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs," says Andy Rubin, the head of Google's Android group. "We didn't want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut."

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb -- it doesn't want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.Continue reading Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for AndroidGoogle holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 07:00:00 EST. Nichicon lays claim to the world's smallest EV chargers with NGQ-202, NGQ-203 models

Although it'll still be hard to misplace in your pile of electronics, a company called Nichicon has launched what it says is the world's smallest chargers for electric vehicles, the NGQ-A202 and the NGQ-A302. By using what the company calls advanced module technology, it was able to shrink its EV charger down by 50 percent to around 59 x 13.8 x 23.6 inches, also reducing the weight by up to 66 percent. Compatible with the ChAdeMO standard, these 20-30kW chargers will work with electric vehicles like Mitsubishi's i-MiEV and the Nissan Leaf, taking between 35 and 60 minutes to fully power your whip. Charging doesn't come cheap, however, as the batteries are said to retail between $24,600 and $27,000 when they launch sometime in October. Next step -- cutting the cord and going wireless, perhaps? Justin Bieber Says Selena Gomez Has 'Relatable, Girl-Next-Door' Appeal

'She's a very nice girl,' he tells MTV News at the Teen Choice Awards.By Kara Warner

Although Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are reluctant to publicly discuss the details of their romance, they are far less shy about showing support for each other in the form of surprise concert appearances, tweets and words of appreciation and encouragement.

When MTV News caught up with Bieber at the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, just before he took home three of the coveted surfboards for Choice Male Artist, Choice Male Hottie and Choice TV Villain, we asked him which of the evening's musical acts he was looking forward to between Gomez, Jason Derülo and OneRepublic.
"Best performance of the night, Selena Gomez," he boldly predicted of his lady friend's yet-to-be-seen performance of "Love You Like a Love Song," which, coincidentally enough, went on to take home the award for Choice Love Song. (Gomez also won awards for Choice Female Hottie, Choice TV Actress Comedy, Choice Music Group and Choice Music Single for "Who Says.")
Check out hot red carpet photos from the Teen Choice Awards.
Bieber went on to say that it's easy to admire the "Wizards of Waverly Place" actress because she's a down-to-earth, genuine person.
"I feel like she's relatable to a lot of different teenagers. She's kind of girl-next-door; she's real cool. She's very nice," he said with a smile. "She's a very nice girl."
After Bieber spoke to MTV News, Gomez and her band the Scene provided the screaming masses in attendance with a rousing rendition of their breakout ballad. Gomez wore a leg-baring gown, adding in some throwback glam with a veiled headpiece.
Tell us what you thought of Selena Gomez's TCA performance in the comments!

Kimbo Slice spectacular in boxing debut with 17-second knockout

Kimbo Slice built his reputation on the streets by destroying his opponents with a ferocious attack. Because of takedowns and grappling, it didn't quite work out for Kimbo in mixed martial arts. Saturday night he went back to his roots, albeit wearing the heavy gloves on instead of going bare-knuckled and scored a vicious 17-second knockout in his professional boxing debut at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.
"It's like second nature for me. I'm comfortable here. I found a home here," said Slice (1-0) of his crossover to boxing.
The 37-year-old also knows he has a lot to learn and didn't want to get too excited about the win.
"I can't give myself a good grade because my movements were a little shady. I felt like I didn't really connect the way I wanted to. I still have a lot of learning to do. I'm a baby, taking baby steps," said Kimbo.
Check out the raw video shot from the crowd in Oklahoma. Kimbo took out James Wade with a brutal uppercut. Wade was out cold balancing on the ropes.

Mobile Miscellany: week of August 22, 2011

This week was packed with news on the mobile front, so it was easy to miss a few stories here and there. Here's some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of wireless for the week of August 15, 2011:

Phone Releases

Fido launched the Samsung Galaxy Q, also known as the Gravity Smart in the US, on Thursday. [via MobileSyrup]

The BlackBerry Curve 9360 can already be purchased on Telus for $50 with a three-year contract, and the Torch 9860 will be available on August 30th. [via IntoMobile and CrackBerry]

SouthernLINC Wireless announced the immediate availability of the Motorola Titanium, offered for $150 with a two-year commitment.

T-Mobile released the Samsung Gravity TXT, a basic messaging phone that's on sale for $10. [via UnwiredView]

Cricket has begun offering a new messaging phone called the Samsung Comment, which offers a full QWERTY keyboard, stereo bluetooth, a microSD slot and 1.3MP camera. It can be had for $90 with no commitment required. [via PhoneScoop]

Other news

The government of South Korea, in reaction to Google's planned acquisition of Motorola, now intends to form a consortium of local companies that will work together in building a brand new mobile operating system. [via IntoMobile]

Randall Milch, Chief Counsel for Verizon, is so frustrated with the patent wars going on that this week he filed an appeal to President Obama, asking for him to provide assistance in the matter. [via PhoneScoop]

The Motorola PRO is expected to debut in the UK in mid-September, though pre-orders are already taking place at select authorized resellers. [via UnwiredView]

Leaked posters indicate the BlackBerry Torch 9850 will be offered by Verizon and screenshots show the same phone going to US Cellular, though we're still unsure of the release date or pricing. [via CrackBerry(1) and (2)]

Last week we reported on the rumored Sony Ericsson Nozumi, a smartphone that will likely feature a 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm S2 CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, and 4.3-inch display with 1280 x 720 resolution. At the time, it was assumed to be only selling in Japan; however, there's a good possibility the Nozumi will end up available globally instead. [via XperiaBlog]

Pantech's LTE phone on Verizon may actually end up being called the Breakout (rather than the "Apache"), according to a leaked screenshot. When released, it'll feature a 1GHz CPU with 512MB of RAM, dual cameras, and will be preloaded with Gingerbread. Not much to write home about at this stage in the game, considering these are incredibly similar to the specs of the LG Revolution. However, it would be the first 4G phone on Big Red that has a 4-inch display. [via AndroidCentral]

T-Mobile may be planning to throw a data pay-per-use feature onto any smartphone that currently has its internet access blocked. If this happens, it will affect current customers as well as new ones. [via TmoNews]

Dish has petitioned the FCC for permission to use 40MHz of allocated spectrum to begin building out an LTE-Advanced network. [via PhoneScoop]

ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here's your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn't really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted -- such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) -- and some fun ASCII art, but that's about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work -- so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools' joke -- and indeed, an annoying 'you can uninstall this!' message appears at the top of every page -- but we're kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.Continue reading ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryearChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 07:15:00 EST. Justin Bieber Tops List Of Richest Teen Entertainers

People magazine reports Bieber made $53 million last year, followed by Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner and others.By Gil Kaufman

Justin Bieber had a very good year. Seriously, like a major one that rivals most corporate CEOs'. According to a People magazine ranking of the top-earning teen actors and musicians, Bieber, 17, raked in $53 million in 2010.
Most of that cash came from his smash movie, "Never Say Never," and his hit fragrance, "Someday." (By contrast, girlfriend Selena Gomez made $5.5 million.) Bieber reached that big-baller level thanks to the record-breaking returns from "Never," which is the most successful concert-themed film in U.S. history, with more than $73 million earned to date.
Nipping at his heels was veteran teen starlet Miley Cyrus, whose haul was $48 million, almost all of it earned from touring.
Other big earners on the list include "Twilight" top wolf Taylor Lautner, who earned $8.5 million for the final two installments of the movie series, as well as $7.5 million for his upcoming starring debut in the action thriller "Abduction."
Nick Jonas had a very good year as well, with totals around $12.5 million, while "Two and a Half Men" star Angus T. Jones banked $7.8 million, thanks to a $300,000 per episode payday.
Jaden and Willow Smith made the list, with Jaden earning $5 million last year, $3 million of it from his starring role in "The Karate Kid," while sister Willow's music career rang up $4 million.
Acting sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning also did pretty well, with Dakota, 17, getting $4 million for "Breaking Dawn" and Elle, 13, taking home $1.5 million for "Super 8."

UFC on Fox: You want cross-promotion? We?ve got cross-promotion

The UFC announced its seven-year deal with FOX on Thursday, promising plenty of cross-promotion between existing FOX entities and the UFC. To help out the network and the promotion, Cagewriter has a few ideas:
A "Glee"/"The Ultimate Fighter" crossover episode -- The fighters have to put together a song and dance to get New Directions to regionals. Rachel Berry and Quinn Fabray finally solve their difference in the Octagon. Dana White and Mr. Schu smile and nod a ton. How could this go wrong?
Put the "American Idol" spin on "The Ultimate Fighter" -- Televise the tryouts, and have a panel either over-praise or break the hearts of every contestant.
"The Family Guy" goes to a UFC show -- Peter Griffin and his buddies head to catch some fights with some buddies in Quahog, only to find out that Brian has his UFC debut, with Stewie as his cornerman. Roy Nelson has a cameo.
Feed a fighter challenge on "Hell's Kitchen" -- The chefs have to create a post weigh-in dinner for Anderson Silva. It has to take into account his nutritional needs and love for fast food. Can they handle it, or will the chefs turn on each other? (Hint: It's reality TV. They're going to turn on each other.)
"So You Think You Can Dance: UFC edition" -- Fighters sure like to show off their moves on their way to the Octagon or after fights. Is it too much to ask for a UFC dance-off? No. No, it is not.

Belfort, Anderson and more: the state of MMA in Brazil today

It's been nearly 13 years since the UFC last visited Brazil, the cradle of the sport. At UFC: Brazil, held October 10, 1998 in Sao Paulo, Vitor Belfort TKOed Wanderlei Silva, in Belfort's first fight at 205 lbs. and Silva's UFC debut. Frank Shamrock submitted John Lober in the main event to defend the UFC middleweight belt, and Pedro Rizzo and Pat Miletich both walked away with wins.
Since then, the UFC has changed just a bit. The UFC was purchased by the Fertitta brothers and Dana White, a reality show widened its reach, and the sponsors upgraded from Mickey's Malt Liquor to Budweiser. Through it all, Brazil's crucial role as the birthplace of great fighters has not changed. From Royce Gracie to Anderson Silva, many of the UFC's best call Brazil home.
This Saturday at UFC 134, the UFC finally returns. What should American MMA fans know about the sport in Brazil these days? Fernando Zanchetta, the MMA blogger for Yahoo! Sports Brazil, answered Cagewriter's questions.
Cagewriter: What is the biggest sport in Brazil?
Fernando Zanchetta: Soccer continues as the biggest sport in the country, and this will not change anytime soon. The sport is an integral part of Brazilian culture with a huge advantage over all others. Second, currently, I'd say it's volleyball, especially after the results in the Olympic Games. The country has many sports other sports it goes crazy about, too, as happened with tennis and F1, but depends only on a few stars.
MMA in Brazil still suffers a lot of prejudice. But I can say that the amount of good fighters has increased gradually, and that it has potential to follow closely the other two (soccer and volleyball).
CW: Who is Brazil's most popular fighter?
FZ: Vitor Belfort (pictured) is still the most popular of the mainstream public. He's fighting since he was 19, married a supermodel (Joana Prado) and participated in a very successful reality show at the beginning of the decade.
Last year, Anderson Silva won many fans, signed important contracts with major brands and learned how to deal better with the press. The knockout against Belfort had a great impact to the world of combat sports in the country. This will increase absurdly after UFC 134, which will be the first broadcast on open television channel in Brazil.

CW: Is MMA big in certain cities, or all over the country?
FZ: The headquarters is still Rio de Janeiro. That's where most folks want to go to evolve technically. Curitiba no longer has the same force like it did at the beginning of the decade, but follows behind Rio. Sao Paulo is the largest city, but still has only a few fighters with international fame (like Demian Maia and Luiz Cane).
The north of Brazil also brings good surprises and becomes well known as a center of hard fighting at Belm do Par and Natal, land of brothers Patrick and Patricky Freire.
CW: Are fighters still learning from luta livre or just jiu-jitsu?
FZ: Luta livre haven't developed as much as jiu-jitsu, which was the major export product of its kind in the 1990s. Today is just a sport restricted to Rio and some gyms outside Brazil. Jiu-jitsu evolution continues around the world.
CW: Are there any young stars that MMA fans should watch for?
FZ: Erick Silva, Freire brothers, Marcelo Magro, John Lineker, and Francisco Massaranduba are among the best to watch.

CW: What else should American MMA fans know about MMA in Brazil?
FZ: Brazil is the birthplace of the sport and it will never change. But there are still remnants of the time when the Vale Tudo was marginalized by the media and society. Now people seem to understand that MMA is a professional sport. There are more specialized media and people are more interested in fights, fighters and all stuff related to it. The new generation of fighters are beginning to take their first -- and good -- steps too.
Obrigado to Fernando for his time. Read Casca Grossa, the Brazilian Yahoo! Sports MMA blog.

John Slattery Defends 'Mad Men' Costar January Jones

Is January Jones as cold in real life as Betty Draper, the character she plays on AMC's Mad Men? It depends who you ask. After being dissed by Jared Gilmore, the 11-year-old who until recently played Jones' son on the show, for being "not as approachable as others," 33-year-old Jones has found a champion in another Mad Men costar.
John Slattery, the 49-year-old actor who plays advertising exec Roger Sterling on Mad Men, has come to the actress' defense, telling E! News, "She's a sweetheart."
At the Television Arts & Sciences' Performers Peer Group 2011 Emmys cocktail reception in Los Angeles Tuesday night, Slattery said there's a clear distinction between Jones the actress and Betty Draper the character. "Well, it's an intimidating character. I mean, that's the character," he said. "Betty Draper is an intimidating woman I suppose, if you were a 7-year-old boy (or) her son."
Though Zach Galifianakis famously accused Jones of being rude, Slattery insists January has never displayed any diva-like behavior on set. "We got lucky," he said. "We don't have anybody like that."
In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2008, Slattery similarly raved about Jones. "She's great," Slattery said. "I watched her do a scene once, in the living room, and I couldn't tell whether she didn't know her lines or whether she was -- it wasn't that she didn't know her lines; it was that, not even moment to moment but second to second, you were like, what is actually going to come out of her mouth?
"She really does it the hard way, which is she doesn't figure out, 'Oh this is how I'm going to do it,'" Slattery continued. "She does it the way it happens in the second, in the moment, and it sounds clichéd but it's really something to see. You see it when it's on film, but to see her actually shoot it is wild."
And despite what Jones's TV son had to say about her, Slattery didn't have to think twice when asked what kind of mom the pregnant Jones is going to be, saying, "I have no doubts she'll make a great mother."

Sonnen goes into full WWE mode, says the Silvas abandoned the Brazilian people

Chael Sonnen is back in full force. His attack on Brazilian mixed martial arts fighters hits a new level with this video shot by redetv.com. Sonnen's latest bit calls out legends like Wanderlei Silva and Anderson Silva for turning their backs on Brazil.
"I'm attempting to pick a fight with fighters from Brazil. Not fighters that care about you Brazil. Fighters that abandoned you," Sonnen said (1:10 mark). "Fighters that claim they're from Brazil like Wanderlei Silva, but he lives in a gated community in Las Vegas. He drives an Aston Martin! Do you guys even know what that is? That's what James Bond drives. It costs two-hundred grand."
Sonnen goes on to say Silva could've been a bit more frugal and sent the money he saved back to Brazil to build schools. He also says Anderson Silva just put $2 million down on an Los Angeles condo.
Playing the role of "Mean" Gene Okerland in this doozy is Fernando Navarro.
Anderson Silva is joined by at least 12 other Brazilian fighters at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro. One has to wonder if Sonnen will really stir the pot by making an appearance at the event. Sonnen's scheduled return to the Octagon comes in October at UFC 136 against Brian Stann.

A jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie -- who else? -- has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you'll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week -- but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

UK Advertising Authority smacks Motorola for misleading Atrix advert (video)

Oh dear. Remember Motorola's advert claiming the Atrix was the "world's most powerful smartphone?" Well it's now been banned in the UK by the Advertising Standards Authority. Viewers complained about the misleading phrase as the Galaxy S II has a faster 1.2 GHz processor, compared to Atrix's 1GHz. Moto said it meant "powerful" in the sense it could drive various devices -- the ASA didn't agree, since the phrase was read out over the final shot in the advert, where the phone appears in isolation. It ruled that as such, the advert was misleading and can only reappear on UK TV with the contentious phrase removed. Armchair adjudicators can decide for themselves in the video after the break.Continue reading UK Advertising Authority smacks Motorola for misleading Atrix advert (video)UK Advertising Authority smacks Motorola for misleading Atrix advert (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 15:12:00 EDT. Apple orders iCab iOS browser to cripple JavaScript modules

The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it's not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that's causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab's JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab's developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. "Maybe if I would have called the modules 'smart bookmarks' and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code."

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple's draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however -- but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

ROM review: Nils' Business GingerSense for the HTC Droid Incredible

We're back with another ROM review, and Android Central forums adviser PvilleComp and his Dinc have returned.  This time we're going to have a look at Nils' Business GingerSense.  It's based on Android 2.3.3, and HTC Sense 3.0 -- proving the point that Android developers can bring what the OEM's can't and keep your phone cruising along with the latest software.  See what all the fuss is about, after the break.Discuss ROMs, hacks, and more for the HTC Droid IncredibleThanks, PvilleComp!

TripAdvisor app for Windows Phone 7 now available

TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related -- from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that's a neat feature, it's also a bit of a downer -- because, really, it's about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn't already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn't work with WP7 at the moment).

While it's nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it'd be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you're frequently on the go -- at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.

Google's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views

Google, as part of its ongoing and much-needed overhaul of its popular Blogger platform, has just enabled five dynamic, HTML5ish, AJAXy 'Dynamic Views'. There's a video introducing the new layouts after the break.

The five new views provide fresh and interesting ways to explore your favorite Blogger blogs. The Mosaic view, for example, creates a wall of thumbnails -- click one, and it zooms to fill the screen; click it again and it minimizes. Flipcard is similar to Mosaic, but not quite as eclectic. Sidebar, Timeslide and Snapshot round off the new views, with each one obviously targeted at different types of content, from photo blogs, to text-only philosophy blogs, and everything in between.

For now, you have to visit a Blogger blog and add /view to the URL to enable the new Dynamic Views. If you own a Blogger blog, you can disable the new views -- and really, why weren't they disabled by default?

If feedback is positive -- which we're sure it will be -- these Dynamic Views will soon be enabled by default. You'll also be able to edit the views in much the same way as current Blogger templates.Continue reading Google's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic ViewsGoogle's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 10:15:00 EST. Filippo Preziosi Debrief Transcript: "Today's Test Was About Ducati's Future"

Shortly after lunchtime at the MotoGP test at Brno, journalists were given an opportunity to talk to Filippo Preziosi, Director General of Ducati Corse and the engineering genius behind Ducati's MotoGP project. Naturally, the question of a traditional twin spar chassis came up, as well as what Ducati was testing on Monday, both questions that Preziosi deflected rather gracefully. But he also talked about the role of the Bridgestone tires in development, and why he would dearly love to be able to race a twin in MotoGP.
A transcript of the press conference follows, and we owe a debt of gratitude to Jensen Beeler of Asphalt & Rubber, who transcribed it for us:

Q:What were you testing?
The test of today was based on understanding what are the main directions for the future, for the mid-term and long-term future. So we tested very different setups in order to check the preferred weight distribution, center of gravity, stuff like that for Vale. For the mid-term. So, in order to give the design people the targets for the new bikes.
Q:When you say mid-term, how far out is that?
One year.
Q:Are you testing these changes with the existing components, or are there any new parts on the bike?

PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play

If you're lucky enough to own an Xperia Play -- Sony Ericsson's new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad -- you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don't have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely -- and more importantly, will it be possible to 'spoof' the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today's release of first-party PlayStation games.PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 04:45:00 EST.
