Kanye West, Justin Bieber Join Tradition Of Mega-Release Weeks
Kanye West
Photo: Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images
The sheer volume of mainstream albums dropping this week makes our head spin like that ancient artifact, the vinyl record. Monday saw the release of Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday, Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Ke$ha's Cannibal, Jay-Z's The Hits Collection Vol. 1, Lloyd Banks' Hunger for More 2 and My Chemical Romance's Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. And Friday is the big day for Justin Bieber's My Worlds Acoustic.
Many may wonder why the bigwigs of the music industry would put out such a gargantuan selection all at once. But there's a precedent for this kind of strategy. In fact, music lovers have been through this very same overload dilemma a handful of times over the last decade. Here's a look back at some of them:
September 11, 2001 became a national tragedy, though it was supposed to be a huge day for the music business. Mariah Carey's "Glitter" soundtrack, Jay-Z's Blueprint, Bob Dylan's Love and Theft, Ben Folds' Rockin' the Suburbs, Nickelback's Silver Side Up and P.O.D.'s Satellite were among the many albums that were released at the beginning of the week.
November 18, 2003 marked the start to one of the year's biggest music release weeks. The range of albums seemed to hit every demographic imaginable. Releases included Britney Spears' In the Zone, Blink-182's self-titled fifth studio album, Timbaland & Magoo's Under Construction, Part II, Christmas albums from Whitey Houston and Ashanti, compilations from Michael Jackson, Moby and Joe Satriani, and live albums/DVDs from Dave Matthews Band and Linkin Park.
Following the pattern of Thanksgiving week album releases, November 22, 2004 began another big week. Two "American Idol" winners, Fantasia and Ruben Studdard went head-to-head with Free Yourself and I Need an Angel, respectively. The shelves were also packed with U2's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, Gwen Stefani's solo debut Love. Angel. Music. Baby., as well as other releases from Creed, Anthrax, Evanescence, Nirvana and Jessica Simpson.
September 12, 2006 was the drop date of Justin Timberlake's second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, which produced five smash hit singles. That week John Mayer's Continuum and Bob Seger's Face the Promise were released, and both eventually went platinum. Other albums and compilations came from the Mars Volta, Papa Roach, Lionel Richie, Veruca Salt, Everclear, and the Barenaked Ladies.
On September 11, 2007 after threatening to retire from music if his album Curtis was outsold, 50 Cent came in second to Kanye West's Graduation. And though he wasn't included in the 50 Cent Challenge, Kenny Chesney's Just Who I Am: Pirates and Poets was released the same day and sold very well. The date also marked the release of Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam, which didn't exactly pose a threat.
One of the wildest weeks of 2009's album drop calendar was easily that of November 16. Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster, Justin Bieber's My World, Leona Lewis' Echo, OneRepublic's Waking Up, Kris Allen's self-titled debut, Norah Jones' The Fall, and compilations from both Janet Jackson and Fall Out Boy were some of the new additions to the music scene.
Which new albums are you buying this week? Talk about it in the comments!
Open the floodgates! It's Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

Christina Aguilera Was "Sad" to Spend Thanksgiving Without Her Son
"This is the first Thanksgiving she was without Max," a source told People.com. "It was really hard for her and she was feeling sad, so she decided to go to the East Coast with Matt and a group of friends."
Aguilera's new beau kept her busy, as they jetted off to New York before heading to Rhode Island to visit Rutler's family.
"Since his family lives so close, they decided to drop in for a few hours," says the source.
Though meeting her man's mom, Kathleen, sounds like a step towards the serious side, the insider claims Aguilera and Rutler (who met on the Burlesque set) are taking things slow.
"They’re still getting to know each other better," says the source.
Do you think it's too soon for Christina Aguilera to meet her new boyfriend's family? Chime in below!

SugarSync giveaway: win a 30GB account for a year
In my mind, there's now no reason to use Dropbox -- unless you're a Linux user, in which case you can stop reading now (SugarSync still doesn't support it). The rest of you should head on over and sign up for a free account. If the multi-device support (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian!) doesn't blow your mind, the share-this-folder-with-a-friend feature will.
But wait! What if 5 gigabytes isn't enough -- because let's face it, 5 GB is the merest of data morsels in today's day and age. Maybe you want 30 GB, free, for a year! In that case, enter our giveaway by leaving a comment below -- we have 10 year-long subscriptions to give away! Beyonce Says She Wants To 'Make My Own Genre Of Music'
Beyoncé
Photo: Getty Images
Beyoncé doesn't have that much left to prove in her career. She's a megaplatinum artist, an accomplished actress, half of one of the most successful musical couples in history and a fashion icon.
But on the follow-up to her smash 2008 Grammy-winning album I Am ... Sasha Fierce, the singer is aiming to carve an entirely new lane for herself.
"I love to dance, I love to sing, and I'm actually in the studio now writing songs and producing," the singer told "Entertainment Tonight" from the set of a new commercial she's filming for Vizio televisions. "I have a lot of live instruments that I'm putting into the tracks to try to change the sound and make my own genre of music."
The commercial will debut on Thanksgiving day, just after the singer rocks prime-time TV with an ABC Thanksgiving special entitled "I Am ... World Tour."
Among the producers and songwriters working with Beyoncé on the new, as-yet-untitled album is Ne-Yo, who helped write one of the 29-year-old singer's biggest hits, "Irreplaceable."
Ne-Yo told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Beyoncé's fourth solo effort is "coming along nicely. I can't speak too much on it, but it's another direction for her, and she's carving out her own niche. ... In a minute nobody will be in Beyoncé's lane. They really can't get in her lane now, but they really can't get in her lane after this album."
In the meantime, producer Jim Jonsin, who produced her song "Sweet Dreams," has also said he has some new directions in mind for Beyoncé. "I'd like to take it even more Depeche Mode-ish, like '80s electro with just some hard drums," he told Rap-Up TV. "I'd love to go there."
That fits with what songwriter Sean "The Pen" Garrett recently told Entertainment Weekly. Garrett, who was behind such hits as "Video Phone," "Diva" and "Upgrade U," said that he was slated to hit the studio with Beyoncé in September and that the results would be hard-hitting.
"I think we are doing a lot of uptempo records for this one," he said.
"She's in such a good place right now in life that she is interested in making party music, definitely."

Beyonce's Banned Perfume Ad Defended By Company
Beyoncé in her ad for Heat
Photo: Coty UK
Beyoncé's steamy new ad for her perfume, Heat, recently gathered some heat of its own from the U.K.'s Advertising Standards Authority — which banned the commercial from the country's daytime TV rotation because of its sexy imagery. Now the company that makes Heat is speaking out about the sanction brought against the ad, which features the singer in a skin-tight, hot-red satin minidress, touching herself and showing some skin.
In a statement from perfume maker Coty that was posted on AceShowbiz.com, the company notes that it doesn't think there's anything too explicit about the TV spot, maintaining that it is "intended to reflect the singer Beyoncé's personal 'sexy chic' style." And while Beyoncé's cleavage is exposed at certain parts of the commercial, Coty added that it's not "overtly graphic or explicitly sexual and at no point was Beyoncé naked."
The company continued, "It was aimed at a vast selection of music programs to target a young adult audience. It would therefore be consistent with the expectations of viewers of those sorts of programs."
In a statement posted on its website, the advertising watchdog said that it has received several complaints about the Jake Nava-directed spot, which initially was aired throughout the day during family programming and now only will be shown after 7:30 p.m. The organization said, "We considered that Beyoncé's body movements and the camera's prolonged focus on shots of her dress slipping away to partially expose her breasts created a sexually provocative ad that was unsuitable to be seen by young children."

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her 'Crazy' Led Zeppelin Covers
Mary J. Blige
Photo: MTV News
You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.
In early February, reports began circulating that Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven," working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her Stronger With Each Tear album, due Monday.
But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering another Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the Essence Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.
"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."
Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.
"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.

B.J. Penn KOs Matt Hughes at UFC 123
The whole fight lasted just 21 seconds, and delivered Penn one of the most spectacular wins of his MMA career. Penn had lost two straight lightweight title fights this year and seemed to be on the downside of his career, but he bounced back in a big way by beating Hughes.
Penn got things started with a 1-2 combination, and when Hughes threw a kick, Penn caught it and nailed Hughes again. They briefly stepped back, and then Penn nailed Hughes with an overhand right, knocking Hughes flat on his back. Penn landed four more punches on the ground and Hughes wasn't defending himself, and the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Internet Explorer 9 beta 2 leaks, looks ready for launch
As reported by WinRumors, there doesn't seem to be any significant change to the user interface. The download manager shows your current download speed without the need to mouse-over, but that's about it. It's now fairly safe to assume that Microsoft hasn't got any secret plans up its sleeve -- the UI you see now is almost certainly the real deal. If the final launch is in January, we can expect to see one more platform update in about 5 weeks, and then a final release towards the end of January.
I'm not going to give you a link to the IE9 beta 2 installer, but you can probably find it with a little searching on Twitter or Google. The installer is legit -- it's signed by Microsoft -- so you don't need to worry about malware of any variety.Internet Explorer 9 beta 2 leaks, looks ready for launch originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 07:02:00 EST. Jessica Simpson, Rihanna, Mandy Moore: Babies Can Wait!
Jessica Simpson, 30, tells Access Hollywood that she can "definitely see myself having a family" with new fiance Eric Johnson, but that they "really haven't talked much about it" yet.
Mandy Moore, 26 -- who lends her voice to the princess in the new Disney film Tangled -- tells E! that she "will definitely have a family" with rocker husband Ryan Adams.
Rihanna, 22, has been dating Dodgers player Matt Kemp since January, and she tells Interview Magazine that she'll have a baby whenever it feels right: "It could be a year from now. It could be ten years from now."
Why all the talk about babies this week? Maybe it has something to do with fellow pop princess Pink, 31, announcing that she and hubby Carey Hart are expecting. What's cool, though, is that all these musicians plan to have babies -- but none of them feel pressured to choose between baby and career. That must be a sign of progress, right?
Those three ladies would do well to take a cue from Pink, who's already got a plan in motion: she tells the Associated Press that "as soon as the baby can say 'mama,' I'm going on the road. We are going to be a traveling family gypsy band with garlands in our hair." Sounds like a pretty amazing childhood to us!

A hot ticket in Detroit, fans are focused on 'Rampage'
"Wrestling and the UFC have changed my
life. The toughest people in the world -- the street punks who think they're
tough, anyway -- are dead or in prison," Jackson said. "If you are in prison, that's the same as
being dead, I think. This sport saved me. I could have been dead. I've been shot
at a few times."
At 32 years old, Jackson (30-8, 5-2 UFC) is still a young guy but the fight marks a crossroad for his career. Plenty of critics are questioning Jackson's ability to get back to the well-rounded ways of his PRIDE days. The powerful brawler has fallen in love with his hands. If you only approach him from one angle, Machida (16-1, 8-1 UFC) is a tough assignment. He needs to mix things up, but in the end, it will be Rampage's power punching that can win him the fight. It's what has fans scurrying for tickets. According to SeatGeek, even with the money struggles in the Motor City, fans are hot and heavy over UFC 123.

'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows' Dominates Weekend Box Office
Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1"
Photo: Warner Bros.
Although Harry, Ron and Hermione have yet to secure all the weapons necessary in their impending battle against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, they've already raised a significant amount of funds for the first half of their two-part war against the Dark Lord: To the surprise of absolutely nobody, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" is a magical success.
The first half of "Deathly Hallows" premiered in theaters this weekend with all of the explosive wonder that fans have come to expect from the "Harry Potter" franchise. With an estimated $125.1 million earned across roughly 4,125 locations, "Deathly Hallows" enjoyed the best opening weekend of any previous "Harry Potter" film, easily stealing the record from "Goblet of Fire," which earned $102.7 million in 2005.
Not only does "Deathly Hallows" mark a new franchise high, it's also the sixth-biggest opening weekend of all time, sitting comfortably alongside such cinematic titans as "The Dark Knight" ($158.4 million), "Spider-Man 3" ($151 million), "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($142.8 million), "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" ($135.6 million) and "Iron Man 2" ($128.1 million).
Despite its successes, however, "Deathly Hallows" was unable to wrest away the record set by "New Moon" for best November weekend of all time, falling short by nearly $20 million. "New Moon" also remains the third-highest-grossing opening weekend of all time, giving "Twilight" the edge over "Harry Potter" — for now, at least, as next summer's "Deathly Hallows" conclusion is poised to break all kinds of records.
"Deathly Hallows" wasn't the only film in theaters this weekend, not that you would have noticed; the film outpaced the combined total of the four remaining top five competitors by a massive $80.1 million margin. Indeed, the only other movie to hit wide release this weekend was "The Next Three Days," and despite the star power of Russell Crowe, the Lionsgate thriller landed poorly in fifth place with $6.8 million.
The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" ($125.1 million)
#2 "Megamind" ($16.2 million)
#3 "Unstoppable" ($13.1 million)
#4 "Due Date" ($9.2 million)
#5 "The Next Three Days" ($6.8 million)
Upcoming Releases
Several newcomers are entering the box-office arena as "Deathly Hallows" looks to continue its domination next weekend: Dwayne Johnson returns to kicking butt and taking names in "Faster," Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi tell fairy tales in Disney's "Tangled," Christina Aguilera and Cher dance off in "Burlesque" and Jake Gyllenhaal enjoys "Love and Other Drugs" with Anne Hathaway.
Check out everything we've got on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1."

Speed up Firefox page loading time without using a RAM disk
Just follow these instructions -- and don't worry, if you mess it up, you won't break anything.
Type about:config into the address bar
Type browser.cache into the Filter field
Set browser.cache.disk.enable to false (double click it)
Set browser.cache.memory.enable to true (double click it)
Right click > New > Integer; type browser.cache.memory.capacity; press OK
Type in 100000 (this is equivalent to 100 megabytes); press OK
Close all Firefox tabs and windows, and then restart the browser
If you want more than 100 megabytes of cache -- if you have lots of spare memory, or you're prone to mammoth browsing sessions -- type in 500000 instead for 500 megabytes of cache. To confirm everything is working, visit about:cache and you should see some 'Memory cache device' information.
I'm currently unable to benchmark this change (Firebug doesn't work with FF4 Beta 7!) but in theory it should be just as fast or faster than the RAM disk approach.. Lee has been using it for a few hours and he says page loads are much faster. If you use Firefox, try it out and let us know whether it feels faster or not!

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover
Adam Lambert performs "Whole Lotta Love" on "American Idol" on Tuesday

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."
That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.
The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.
For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.
Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Bruno Mars' 'Grenade' Video: The Passion Of The Crooner
Bruno Mars in his "Grenade" music video
Photo: Elektra Records
Bruno Mars is sort of like Meat Loaf, only without limits: He would do anything for love, including — but not limited to — catching a grenade, putting his hand on a blade, leaping in front of a train, being shot in the brain and, of course, dragging a piano all around Greater Los Angeles.
That last one doesn't rhyme, because it's not supposed to. It's the basic premise of Mars' brand-new "Grenade" video, which finds the diminutive crooner shouldering the load (literally) for love, lugging an upright piano over freeways, through tunnels, past some serious gangbangers (and one mean-ass pit bull) and against traffic to serenade his special lady friend. Of course, by the time he makes it to her house, she's already found her way into the arms of another man, which disheartens Mars to such a degree that he sets himself (and his piano) down in front of a speeding train. After all, not only is he a man of his word, but as he proves over the course of the video, he's not exactly opposed to a dramatic gesture either.
Credit is due to Mars for thinking outside the rather rote, pop&B box when it came time to make the "Grenade" video. After all, it would've been easy — and expected — to make something slick, sexy and/or saccharine, a glossy thing where he croons from a rooftop somewhere, removes his shirt, and somehow ends up with the girl. None of that happens here. Rather, we see Mars struggling and sweating, being taunted and tempted, falling and rising again (there is something oddly "Passion of the Christ" about his ordeal). He ends up alone, unloved. He probably gets flattened by a train. It is sort of sad, really.
With "Grenade," Bruno Mars further distances himself from his smoove-crooning contemporaries, and he does it simply by being real. Really dramatic, really emotional, really clever. This one's a winner, even if, at the end of it, Mars has lost everything. That's the price you pay for falling in love.
What did you think of the "Grenade" video? Let us know in the comments!
